My wife and I enjoy to watch movies together. This being the case, I decided to start my own movie review blog. As a note, we almost never go to the theater to see movies, so most of the movies will be at least 3 months old.
My Review: This film was about where I expected it to be. Nothing too spectacular and pretty predictable. Most of the Indiana Jones films are pretty predictable though. Harrison Ford still has it as the old Jones in this one. I thought that Cate Blanchett really stole the film though and did an excellent job. She made a very convincing evil Russian woman - and her Russian is actually pretty good compared to most.
Recommend: This is a fun family film. There are a couple of scenes that may be a little intense for little ones, but overall a fun film.

Synopsis: DUPLICITY is a slick, Soderberghian comic caper in which it’s never exactly clear who is being conned. It’s easy to see that ex-CIA agent Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and former MI6 member Ray Koval (Clive Owen) have a heated history together when they embark on an elaborate mission of corporate espionage. Two rival CEOs (played by the always fantastic Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti) are battling for the top spot in their industry, and a top-secret new product would determine who would wear the crown. But this isn’t just about business innovation and profit: Claire and Ray have a plan that would help them get the prized formula and walk away with millions. Tony Gilroy’s previous work as screenwriter and director--namely the Jason Bourne films and MICHAEL CLAYTON--didn’t give any indication that he could create something this bouncy and light. But while DUPLICITY is fun, it’s never dumb; it jumps back and forth in time with style, playing an elaborate game that its scheming lead characters would be proud of. As Ray and Claire, Owen and Roberts display the same fiery chemistry that they showed in the gut-punching romantic drama CLOSER, but this time, they play (mostly) nice. If DUPLICITY can draw comparison to the classic genre bender CHARADE, then it’s not a stretch to liken Owen to Cary Grant--he has an easy charm that ensnares not only each woman in the film but everyone in the audience as well.
My Review: I was expecting more from this film with the excellent cast. They did do a good job but the film was a bit of a dissapointment. It kind of dragged along at times and I was wondering if it was ever going to end. Clive and Julia have a fun little relationship going and they do a great job. I liked the fun twist at the end as well.
Recommend: This film probably wouldn't be a good one for kids. It would be a suitable date night film.

He quickly realizes that the mysterious siblings, Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig), are far from average--especially when they are pursued by a villain wearing a high-tech suit of armor. With the help of Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), the trio travels to Witch Mountain, a secret government outpost in the Nevada desert, with the hopes of evading their pursuers and sending Sara and Seth home--and saving Earth in the process. This latest installment in the Witch Mountain series comes more than 30 years after the release of the first two films, ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN. Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who played siblings Tia and Tony in the original films, appear in small but pivotal roles as a waitress and a sheriff. Johnson makes Bruno likable, even though the character barely likes himself. Robb and Ludwig are well cast as the earnest siblings who hold the fate of the world in their hands. Chase scenes abound and special effects that highlight the teens’ special powers are prevalent, but the film remains kid-friendly. Cheech Marin and Garry Marshall make brief cameo appearances
My Review: I've been meaning to watch this film for sometime. I found the film quite entertaining and I enjoyed all of it. Dwayne Johnson gives a good performance and as always has his moments. The kids he meet are pretty good in the film as well and I thought that Dwayne and AnnaSophia had a great on screen relationship going. This film is fast paced and funny which made it great.
Recommend: This is one for the whole family to enjoy.

Synopsis: Martin Scorsese's THE AVIATOR is a lavish spectacle of a motion picture that harks back to Hollywood's Golden Era in telling the story of Howard Hughes, one of 20th-century America's most pioneering and influential figures. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric billionaire, Scorsese's biopic concentrates on Hughes's life between the 1920s and '40s, when he made striking contributions to both the film and aviation industries. At only 25 years of age, Hughes directed the most expensive film ever made up to that point, HELL'S ANGELS (1930), which Scorsese gleefully recreates here in all its sprawling, audacious glory. At the same time, he became known as an unabashed playboy, bedding the likes of Jean Harlow (singer Gwen Stefani), Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), and Katherine Hepburn (a brilliant Cate Blanchett). In the mid-'30s, he turned his attention to the aviation industry, where he quickly became world-renowned for shattering speed and distance records. He also continued to test the limits of flight technology, building bigger, faster, and stronger aircrafts. All the while, he struggled with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that sent him into a full-fledged tailspin after a near-fatal plane crash. The film concludes with Hughes being called before the Senate in 1947 to defend himself against the nefarious Senator Owen Brewster (Alan Alda), who accused Hughes of taking money from the United States government during wartime. Stunningly photographed by Robert Richardson, Scorsese's nearly three-hour drama features an impassioned performance by DiCaprio, who is also credited as an executive producer. Although she appears in less than a third of the film, Blanchett delivers a performance that cements her status as one of the finest actresses ever to appear on the big screen.
My Review: Pretty good and interesting film about the aviator, Howard Hughes. I must say that the film was a little too long and felt like it was dragging by the end but it was interesting to learn a little bit about the history of the airline companies and how crazy Mr. Hughes was. Dicaprio did a good job portraying Mr. Hughes and I was pretty captivated by this odd and different man.
Recommend: Date night maybe? Don't watch this when you're tired as you'll never make it through. Definitely see this film if you haven't.

Synopsis: Haunted by memories of her late mother, 14-year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) runs away with her friend and caregiver Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) to the South Carolina town that holds the key to her mother's past. There, Lily meets the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo), who take her in and teach her about beekeeping, honey and the Black Madonna.
My Review: I was very impressed by this film. Very rarely do I find a film better than the book it is based on, but this is one of those rare exceptions. I think the main reason is because of the excellent cast and acting in this film. They truly brought the story to life of Lily trying to find herself. The film follows the book almost exactly with only one small derivation that doesn't affect a whole lot. I really enjoyed this movie.
Recommend: Date night film. Children won't be interested, but this is truly a great film to watch with someone else. Definitely check this movie out.

My Review: This film was too long. It was just too slow for all of the content that it covered. It is based off of the book by Arthur Golden that was an international bestseller. The film follows the book to a degree but there are a lot of things that have changed. The acting was pretty good in the film and the overall storyline was interesting. It is certainly interesting to learn more about other cultures.
Recommend: If you are interested in learning more about the Japanese culture and what a Geisha is then check this film out. Not really a good one for the kids so plan on just the adults for this one.

My Review: This was a good film about a young man from Afghanistan. The film is based on the book by Khaled Hosseini and follows it pretty closely. The reason for me watching the film was to see how closely it actually followed the book. The film was pretty well done, but I felt like it was a little slow at some points, but that is probably because I had read the book. The film is pretty moving as the book is. If you are going to read the book then do so before watching the movie. Otherwise, the film is a decent substitute for the book. The acting was pretty good. It was interesting to learn more about Afghanistan and its history.
Recommend: Adults, maybe a date night. There are some more advanced themes in the film that are probably not as appropriated for younger children and they won't be interested. Note that most of the movies is subtitled so be prepared to read.

After making roughly 600,000 dollars on his clandestine endeavor and compromising everything from the identities of KGB spies working for the American government to nuclear war contingency plans, Hanssen was eventually transferred to a newly created position at the FBI's Washington headquarters and assigned the task of guarding his country's most sensitive secrets. It was while working in this capacity that a young agent named Eric O'Neill (Phillipe) was assigned the task of keeping tabs on Hanssen by suspicious higher-ups. My Review: This film was way too long. It wasn't even 2 hours and it felt like I had been watching it for 4. It was an interesting story and the facts that they showed at the end of the film were quite fascinating (it's based on a true story) but other than that the stuff in between felt too long. The film was pretty slow and there wasn't any really great plot twists or anything.
Recommend: Only watch this film if you care about the history involved. If you are looking for a thriller or who did it type of film then you should look elsewhere because this film just won't do it for you.

However, Maggie sees boxing as the one part of her life that gives her meaning and won't give up easily. Finally won over by her determination, Frankie takes on Maggie, and as she slowly grows into a viable fighter, an emotional bond develops between them. My Review: This movie was good but I felt like it was too long. By the end I was ready for it to be over. The film was depressing as well so that didn't help. I am not a big fan of boxing but this was a pretty inspirational story and I thought that Clint Eastwood gave an excellent performance. He made his character pretty believable and I really felt bad for him for never winning a championship.
Recommend: Kids won't enjoy it and you should only watch this if you are pretty awake and ready for the depressing story. The film is good.

My Review: This movie was great. It kept my interest from the very beginning with the excitement of the magic tricks and carried all the way through to the surprise ending. Ed Norton does a superb job and the storyline is very good. Too be honest, it was quite different from what I was expecting but that didn't mean it was bad. I actually really enjoyed the basic plot and storyline.
Recommend: This is a fun film for everyone. The kids may lose interest mid-way through because it does turn a little more to the story than magic, but they should still enjoy it.

My Review: They did a pretty decent job of taking the book to film. The film was completely action packed and there was no slow parts. My biggest problem with the film was the lack of explanation as to what was going on. I understood what was going on because I have read the book but otherwise I would have been pretty lost. Acting was alright but nothing spectacular. I did think the Carmelengo was well cast. The other issue that I had with the film is that I wish they would have shown the symbols better (Earth, Air, Wind, and Fire). When I read the book, they absolutely captivated me.
Recommend: If you've read the book, then you likely be disappointed. Otherwise, check this film out for a date night.

Synopsis: It’s 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James (Amy Adams), a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence.
My Review: Doubt was pretty good for most of the movie but the ending just destroyed any good things that were in the movie. The film felt like it went on too long and the ending felt "unfinished" in a way. The only reason that the film didn't get an F was because the acting in the film was pretty good and like I said, I was engaged and enjoying the movie until close to the end.
Recommend: No. Don't waste your time with this movie. You will feel cheated.

Would Nixon evade questions of his role in one of the nation's greatest disgraces? Or would Frost confound critics and bravely demand accountability from the man who'd built a career out of stonewalling? My Review: This film was excellent. The acting was very good. Both Frost and Nixon were very believable characters and the history that was portrayed was extremely interesting. The only reason that I didn't give an A+ to this film is because there were a couple of parts that were a bit slow in the film. However, the film moves along pretty well and the Nixon confession is great.
Recommend: This is a great film to learn some history. Not for children as they will lose interest fast. Definitely recommend this film.

Synopsis: Filmmaking duo Thomas and Charles Guard make their feature directorial debuts as the co-directors of this remake of Kim Jee-woon's 2003 Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters. Produced by Asian horror remake king Roy Lee, The Uninvited tells the story of a young girl named Anna (Emily Browning), who was admitted into a mental hospital following the death of her biological mother. Returning home some time later, Anna is shocked to discover that her father (David Strathairn) has recently gotten engaged to Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), her mother's former nurse. Anna's suspicions about Rachel are soon confirmed when her mother reaches out from the beyond to deliver a stark warning, prompting the young girl and her sister (Arielle Kebbel) to try and convince their father that Rachel is not who she appears to be. My Review: I have to say wow. I was really impressed and surprised at this movie. I didn't really expect to be that great but it was pretty good most of the way and the ending was a complete shock and unexpected. The film had its moments of being scary but there wasn't anything too bad. I still can't get over how much I really liked the ending of this movie.
Recommend: Check it out for sure. Don't watch it with the kids though as it won't be too interesting for them and maybe a little too scary. Great movie for a date.

My Review: This film was action packed from the very first scene. This is why the rating was so high for me on this one. The storyline was alright, but I think that I liked the 3rd one better than this (in terms of story). Vin Diesel however did a good job and I thought he made this film better. I am not a big car fan but the races in this film were very intense and kept your heartbeat up. Of course there were a lot of underdressed women in this film but that is to be expected in such a film I suppose. Overall a good film.
Recommend: This film would be a great date night film if you are looking for something not as romantic but just more fun. It was an exciting film, but probably not one for the kids.

As the hero begins to tackle the fact that life on Earth has continued without him, he is forced to face his old arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) and restore the life that was once his. Directed by Bryan Singer from a script by the writing team of X-Men 2, Superman Returns marks a return to the screen for the man in tights, whose production history has seen many failed attempts including a famous near-miss from Tim Burton and Kevin Smith with Nicolas Cage in the lead role, along with another from director McG and writer J.J. Abrams (Lost). My Review: This film was great. I probably should have watched the other Superman films that are before this to get the full plot as to what is going on, but this film was still great regardless. Superman was great and I love who they cast for him. There was lot of great action and lots of great Superman moments. They really did an excellent job with the film and even being more than 2 hours it didn't feel long at all. It could have probably gone another half hour without feeling too long. The story had a great twist in it as well. Oh yeah, and Kevin Spacey was perfect as Lex Luther.
Recommend: For sure. The whole family will like it even if you don't remember the earlier films. Check this film out!

My Review: This movie was too slow. I liked the movie overall and the idea but it felt really long and I got bored with it. The acting was good and Anne Hathaway did a great job as usual, but I just couldn't get into this movie. The twist at the end was unexpected but I was already too out of it by that point.
Recommend: If you want to, you can check it out, but this movie is one you won't be sad you missed. Nothing super spectacular here.

My Review: Excellent film and right up there with all the other great sports movies. This film really hit home with me and once again made me greatful to live in a day when such dark times are behind us. This story is truly inspirational and the film is a lot of fun. I had never heard of Ernie Davis before watching the film and I grew to greatly respect him for what he did. Great film.
Recommend: Absolutely, and especially if you are a sports fan of any kind. This film is a great one to learn the history of the sport of football as well as America.

My Review: This movie was a lot less action than I was thinking and a lot of trying to understand who did what and how it all happened. Russell Crowe delivers another excellent performance with his work in this one and he definitely saved the movie for me. If I hadn't been awake for this one then I would have been very lost as to what was going on. It could have been a little shorter as I felt they were dragging the movie out a little, but still an excellent film.
Recommend: This movie would be a great date night film if you are both into these types of films. Little kids will be bored out of their minds with this one. Be ready to think and pay attention carefully.

Fifty years later, the time capsule is unearthed for a new generation of students to examine. Young Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) is one of those students. The mysterious sequence of numbers falling into his possession, Caleb takes the paper to his father, Professor John Koestler (Cage), for examination. Studying the numbers, Professor Koestler soon discovers that they aren't random at all, but an encoded message containing the precise dates, death tolls, and coordinates of every major disaster since the time capsule was buried. My Review: This film was not that great. I think the ending just really put me off when I finally understood what was going on. I am not a fan of movies that end the way this one did and so that really put me off. The film kept me entertained most of the way and I got nervous a few times. The film was decent, but once again I didn't like the ending one bit.
Recommend: Probably not. If you don't have any other choices then you can watch it, but don't expect much. And if you do watch it, be prepared for the ending to be really bad!
